Supreme Court Says Jantar Mantar Violence Panel Receives Few Complaints

New Delhi: The Supreme Court said that a committee investigating allegations of violence and police excesses during a student protest at Jantar Mantar on July 20 had received very few complaints so far. Due to insufficient material, the panel is currently unable to reach any conclusion.

The High-Powered Enquiry Committee (HPEC), headed by former judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy, informed the court that despite arrangements for submitting complaints through an online portal and email, the response had been limited.

At the committee’s meeting on October 29, only one complainant appeared with an affidavit, according to the information presented before the court.

The committee is examining allegations of violence during the protest, including claims of attacks on demonstrators and police personnel. However, it has not received sufficient evidence to establish the circumstances of the incident or draw conclusions at this stage.

The Supreme Court allowed the petitioners to forward videos, petitions and affidavits submitted by victims to the committee for examination.

The court also directed the panel to collect responses from the concerned parties and submit interim reports at regular intervals. The committee will continue its inquiry based on the material and responses received.
