Agnipath Scheme May Extend Agniveers’ Service To Six Years

New Delhi: The Central Government is reportedly considering a major change to the Agnipath recruitment scheme, which could allow Agniveers to serve in the armed forces for two additional years after completing their initial four-year tenure.

According to media reports, the proposed extension, described as a “Second Tour of Duty”, could increase the total service period from four to six years. The additional service is expected to be optional, subject to the individual’s willingness and eligibility.

The development comes ahead of the completion of service by the first batch of Agniveers. More than 18,300 personnel from this batch are expected to complete their four-year tenure by November and December 2026.

Reports have also referred to information expected from Chief of Defence Staff General NS Raja Subramani on November 4 regarding the service period. However, detailed official guidelines on the proposed extension are still awaited.

The Agnipath scheme was launched on June 14, 2022. Under the existing arrangement, Agniveers are recruited for four years, and up to 25% of each batch may be selected for regular service based on performance and prescribed criteria. The remaining personnel are released after completing their tenure.

If implemented, the proposed extension could provide additional service opportunities to Agniveers not selected for regular enrolment. Eligibility conditions, selection procedures and the possibility of further regular service have not yet been officially clarified.
