The trials conducted by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University, Patiala, for various sports have been successfully concluded. University Vice Chancellor Prof. Pushpinder Singh Gill stated that the Punjab Government has approved 350 seats for the Maharaja Bhupinder Singh Punjab Sports University’s Sports Wing. The trials for these seats were held on September 3 at the Physical College, Patiala.
Players from various sports, including volleyball, basketball, kabaddi, hockey, judo, table tennis, football, kho-kho, athletics, handball, archery, wrestling, swimming, gymnastics, lawn tennis, boxing, and badminton, participated in these trials.
Prof. Gill added that trials for weightlifting, netball, fencing, and cycling are still pending. 532 elite athletes from Punjab participated in these first trials organized by Punjab Sports University.
The Vice Chancellor stated that Punjab Sports University is the first university to provide athletes with quality coaches, excellent playing fields, state-of-the-art gyms, state-of-the-art health care laboratories, sports experts, and excellent hostel facilities.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Pushpinder Singh Gill further explained that to promote excellence in sports, the university is providing athletes with every possible facility so they can bring glory to Punjab at the international level. This is the primary reason why a large number of enthusiastic athletes participated in the first-ever sports wing trials.
He added, “We will strive to increase the number of seats in our sports wing next time so that Punjab athletes can benefit from the facilities available at their own university. We now have 150 resident and 200 day-scholar athletes. We are responsible for their development in every aspect. We promise that our athletes will set new and high standards in the future.”
He added that along with sports, special attention is also being paid to the athletes’ academics, so that they can establish themselves as accomplished scholars in the academic field.
Vice Chancellor Dr. Gill shared a special information that Sardar Jaspreet Singh, Attorney-at-Law from California (USA), has pledged to provide a diet plan worth Rs. 50 lakh per year for the athletes of Punjab Sports University. This effort will help provide better and nutritious food to the athletes. He expressed his heartfelt gratitude to Sardar Jaspreet Singh for this.
