Chandigarh: Three leaders who recently left the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), adding a new development to Punjab’s political landscape ahead of the 2027 Assembly elections.
The leaders are Chetan Singh Jauramajra, Harmeet Singh Pathanmajra and Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh. They formally joined the BJP at an event in New Delhi, where Punjab BJP in-charge Satish Poonia and state party president Kewal Singh Dhillon welcomed them. Other senior BJP leaders were also present.
Pathanmajra represents the Sanaur Assembly constituency in Patiala district, while Jauramajra is the MLA from Samana. Both resigned from AAP’s primary membership on November 1. After their resignations, they held a press conference in Chandigarh and raised questions about the Punjab government’s performance, citing issues including drugs, corruption and law and order. Both had earlier been suspended by AAP over allegations of anti-party activities.
Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, an MLA from Amritsar North and a former IPS officer, also submitted his resignation to the Punjab Assembly Speaker on November 1. He had been suspended by AAP for five years in June 2025.
The development comes shortly after AAP released its first list of 40 candidates for the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections. The three leaders’ entry into the BJP has added another dimension to the state’s political developments ahead of the polls.
