Himachal Pradesh Wins Supreme Court Relief In BBMB Power Sharing Dispute

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh has received significant relief from the Supreme Court in a long-running dispute over electricity allocation from the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). State Advocate General Anup Rattan said the state had won its legal battle in a civil suit filed in 1996.

According to Rattan, the Supreme Court awarded Himachal Pradesh 11,973 million in the case. The decision relates to the state’s claim concerning its share of electricity generated through the BBMB system.

The Advocate General said the ruling could provide Himachal Pradesh with annual earnings of approximately ₹600 crore to ₹800 crore. The development is being viewed by the state government as an important outcome after nearly three decades of legal proceedings.

The report also states that Punjab and Haryana will have to share electricity in accordance with the applicable allocation arrangements following the ruling.

The dispute concerns the distribution of power generated through projects managed by the BBMB, which plays a key role in managing water and electricity resources in the region.

The ruling is expected to have financial implications for Himachal Pradesh. However, the detailed directions of the Supreme Court and the precise mechanism for implementing the revised allocation were not included in the information provided.
