India’s Largest Nuclear Plant Adopts Russian Hardware Technology to Strengthen Cybersecurity Defences

New Delhi: India is introducing new hardware-based technology to reduce the risks of software failures and cyberattacks at nuclear power plants. The technology is currently being installed at the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant in Tamil Nadu, described in the report as the country’s largest nuclear facility.

Russian state-owned nuclear energy company Rosatom has reportedly supplied approximately 300 sets of security equipment based on the new technology to the Kudankulam plant.

The move is aimed at strengthening the plant’s protection against potential cyber threats and reducing its reliance on vulnerable software-based systems. Hardware-based security solutions can provide additional safeguards by helping isolate or protect critical systems from unauthorised access and certain types of digital attacks.

The development comes amid concerns about cybersecurity risks facing critical infrastructure, including nuclear facilities. Software crashes and cyberattacks can pose serious operational challenges, making robust security systems an important part of protecting sensitive industrial installations.

According to the report, two major cyberattacks have occurred over the past decade, highlighting the importance of improving digital security at nuclear facilities. However, the available information does not identify those incidents or provide details about their impact.

The installation of the Russian-supplied equipment represents a further step in efforts to strengthen cybersecurity at Kudankulam. Details about the precise functions of the equipment, the installation timeline and the systems it will protect have not been specified in the report.

The plant’s operator and relevant authorities would need to provide further technical information to clarify how the new technology will be integrated into existing safety and security arrangements.
