New Delhi: The Supreme Court expressed concern over reports of various types of firecrackers being openly sold in Delhi markets despite restrictions imposed by the court.
A bench comprising Justices M.M. Sundresh and Prasanna B. Varale referred to a Hindustan Times report highlighting the alleged sale of different firecrackers in violation of the court’s directions.
The bench directed Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati to examine the reported violations and investigate whether the court’s orders were being breached.
On Monday, the Supreme Court had permitted the sale of only certified green firecrackers in Delhi-NCR from November 4 to November 6.
The court had also allowed the use of certified green firecrackers on November 7 and 8 during two specified time windows: from 6 am to 7 pm and from 8 pm to 10 pm.
The latest directions came after the court took note of reports suggesting that prohibited varieties of firecrackers were available in local markets despite the restrictions.
The court’s intervention is focused on ensuring compliance with the permitted categories and timings for firecracker sales and use during the Diwali period.
