PM Modi Inaugurates RBI Data Centre in Odisha for Banking System Backup

Bhubaneswar: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday inaugurated the Reserve Bank of India’s second data centre in Khurda district of Odisha, strengthening the country’s digital banking infrastructure and disaster recovery capabilities.

Located at Info Valley-II near Bhubaneswar, the 18.55-acre facility will serve as a disaster recovery backup for the RBI’s main data centre in Navi Mumbai. The new centre is designed to support continuity of critical financial services if the Mumbai facility becomes unavailable.

According to the information provided, the Odisha data centre will help maintain essential banking and payment operations in the event of a disruption caused by natural disasters, other emergencies or attacks affecting the primary facility.

The backup system is intended to support key payment platforms, including the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), Real Time Gross Settlement (RTGS) and National Electronic Funds Transfer (NEFT). These systems are widely used for digital transactions, interbank transfers and other financial activities across India.

The additional facility is expected to strengthen operational resilience by providing an alternative location for critical data and services. Such disaster recovery infrastructure helps financial institutions reduce the risk of widespread disruption if a primary data centre experiences technical failures or other emergencies.

The inauguration marks an infrastructure development aimed at improving the reliability of India’s banking and payment ecosystem. The supplied report did not provide further technical details about the centre’s capacity, commissioning schedule or the specific systems already operational at the facility.
