Jalandhar: The Food Safety Department in Jalandhar has destroyed approximately 125 kilograms of spoiled sweets seized from a shop in Shahkot during an inspection ahead of the festive season.

According to the supplied report, the department’s team inspected sweet shops in Shahkot as part of a crackdown on suspected food adulteration. During the operation, officials seized around 1.25 quintals of sweets that were reportedly unfit for consumption and destroyed them on the spot.

The shopkeeper was accused of mixing old sweets with milk and sugar to prepare them again for sale as fresh products. However, the allegation will need to be assessed by the relevant authorities, and the supplied report did not provide details of any final findings or penalties imposed against the shopkeeper.

In addition to destroying the spoiled sweets, the Food Safety Department collected 10 food samples and sent them to a laboratory for testing. The laboratory results are expected to help determine whether the sampled products met prescribed food safety standards.

The inspection forms part of efforts to monitor food quality during the festive period, when demand for sweets typically increases. Officials are checking products sold in the market to identify potentially unsafe items and suspected adulteration.

Consumers are advised to purchase sweets from reliable sellers and pay attention to freshness, packaging and hygiene. Any suspected cases of adulteration can be reported to the relevant food safety authorities.

Further action in the case may depend on the laboratory findings and the outcome of the department’s investigation.
